Piano Solo Guidelines

The following is a list of suggested proficiency levels for Class A, B & C piano players was presented to the Association at the November 1996 annual state meeting by Carol McNary. After it was adopted, the members voted to change the required list of solos to a suggested list of solos. Therefore, the following suggestions and required list was never implemented.

Feel free to use it as a guide in the selection of piano solos for contest. It should be noted that District 3 voted to return to this required piano list as well as a required vocal list at the 2000 District 3 Solo & Ensemble Contest.

Class A Solos | Class B Solos | Class C Solos | Class D Solos | Class E Solos | Home

SUGGESTED PROFICIENCY LEVEL FOR CLASS A
Major scales through 5 sharps, harmonic minor scales through 3 sharps 2 octaves with correct fingering.
Arpeggios 2 octaves with above scales.
Sight-read at a low Class C level and easy choral or four-part hymns.
Be able to play and understand multiple rhythms.
Should have a thorough understanding of styles and dynamics.
Be able to accompany easy choral literature and at least Class C instrumental solos.
Should be studying sonatas by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

SUGGESTED PROFICIENCY LEVEL FOR CLASS B
Major scales through 2 sharps with corresponding harmonic minor scales and arpeggios-2 octaves with correct fingering.
Should be able to sight-read Class D level literature.
Be able to handle multiple rhythms and understand style and dynamics.
Should be studying sonatinas (Clementi, Kuhlau etc.) technique studies such as Hanon, Czerny and begin study of Bach Two-Part Inventions.

SUGGESTED PROFICIENCY LEVEL FOR CLASS C
Major scales through 3 sharps-harmonic minor scales of A, E & D one octave with correct fingering.
Sight-read at Class E level.
Should be able to play simplified studies of Hanon (Jr. Hanon), Czerny and other technique builders also beginning Bach pieces.
