Suggested String Solo & Ensemble Lists
Suggested Music Lists
In most cases these lists are "suggested" lists. Please check your District's page to see if any lists are "required lists.
Because of changes in the music publishing industry and how quickly music can go Out Of Print, these list are as current as we can make them without turning it into a full time profession.
Please use them as guides. If a selections is listed as a certain class, enter it as that class. Arbitrarily changing classes of a listed solo can cause problems on contest day.
Please Enter Search Information
You do not need to enter search information in all fields.( i.e. to view just the Class C solos, enter a C in the Class field and click the Search button. You can also search by instrument, title or composer by entering that information in those fields.)
To view All of the String Solos & Ensembles, select an asterisk ( * ) in any of the fields below and click Search.
The following is a list of suggested proficiency levels for Class A, B, C, D & E string solos.
CLASS “A” VIOLIN AND VIOLA
- Tempo with running 8th or 16th notes
- Key changes within the solo
- Shifting into different positions
- The use of ornaments
- Rhythm difficulty
CLASS “B” THROUGH “E” VIOLIN AND VIOLA
- Very similar to the criteria one would use for woodwinds and brass
CLASS “A” CELLO
- Same as class “A” violin and viola
CLASS “A” STRING BASS
- Same as class “A” violin and viola
- Shifting into position (above 1st ledger line – C natural)
CLASS “B” THROUGH “E” STRING BASS
- Same as cello
